More than just a mine - Poldark mine is a site with something for all the family
"One of the two most atmospheric mine tours . . . . in Europe, the other being the Wieliczka Salt Mine in Poland"
SIR NEIL COSSONS, Former CHAIRMAN, ENGLISH HERITAGE
Follow in the Footsteps Of 18th Century Cornish Tin Miners
Unique PREHISTORIC evidence of working for alluvial tin, the site of the first recorded TIN STAMPS in the Duchy (1493) and its 18th century TIN MINE makes Poldark one of Cornwall’s most important heritage sites. Situated in the picturesque Wendron Valley, now a WORLD HERITAGE SITE, once the scene of intense industrial activity, the site’s attractive surroundings and gardens belie its industrial past.
In addition to its important heritage the site has a wide range of activities - search the Gemsands for DIAMONDS and PRECIOUS GEMSTONES - PAN for REAL alluvial GOLD - THROW A POT at the potter's wheel -MAKE A CANDLE - try your hand at WOODTURNING - wander through the MUSEUM - watch the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site video - make your own souvenir in the SANDS OF CORNWALL - have a snack in the POLDARK CAFE - visit the Mine Shop for a range of Poldark goods and REAL GEMSTONE JEWELRY and FACETED GEMSTONES
Poldark is once again the scene of activity with craft workshops run by local crafts people including jewellers, candle makers, pottery makers, ceramic painters and wood turners. Poldark is by far Cornwall's most popular mining heritage site.
An independent site, rescued from receivers in 2000 by local mining heritage enthusiasts, Poldark receives no public funding support but is assisted by volunteers including Cornwall Mine Rescue Organization
