Description

Kittiwake Cottage is a traditional Cornish stone cottage a short level walk from Portreath’s harbour and safe, sandy beach, newly decorated with new, wooden, double-glazed windows. Its long (180 foot!) garden is full of ‘Cornish’ plants – gunnera, palm trees, euphorbia - and has three outdoor seating areas so you can follow the sun as it sets behind Western Hill. A large lockable shed provides ample space for wetsuits, surfboards and bikes. Directly along the back of the garden runs the historic Portreath tramroad, which linked the port with inland tin and copper mining areas in the early 19th Century and is now part of a beautiful coast-to-coast route for cyclists, riders and walkers. A private parking space is tucked in at the top of the garden, with additional unrestricted parking on Greenfield Terrace, at the front of the house. The cottage has central heating and a wood burner in an inglenook fireplace in the lounge for cooler evenings and autumn and winter days.Kittiwake is well-equipped with washing machine, dryer, oven, gas hob, extractor fan, fridge, freezer etc. and there is a large selection of books, DVDs, CDs, games and toys. The cottage has three good-sized bedrooms, a comfortable, beamed lounge with leather sofas, a TV and DVD/CD player, a large kitchen with farmhouse pine table and chairs – and a garden ‘loo’. Modern, wooden double glazing and a wood-burner keep the cottage snug in Winter. There are no steps to the front or the back doors, but the stairs to the bedrooms are steep with restricted headroom. Please mind your head! Your welcome pack includes a Cornish cream tea, wine, bread, juice, milk, butter, tea bags and coffee. The long garden is a 'work in progress' but still lovely. On some days you can hear the surf. There are vegetables and fruit for you to pick in season.

Area description

Portreath is a small coastal village which welcomes visitors warmly but also has its own community spirit. Its pubs and restaurants offer plenty of choice minutes from Kittiwake Cottage. Everyday needs are supplied by the supermarket/post office and a bakery. The village is situated about halfway between well-known Cornish resorts Newquay and St. Ives and within a short drive of the beautiful Atlantic coast beaches in either direction – Porthtowan, St. Agnes, Perranporth and Godrevy, Gwithian, Hayle and Carbis Bay. Clifftop walks provide spectacular views in all seasons and a glimpse of Cornwall’s fascinating flora and fauna. The cove itself encloses a safe, sandy beach for swimmers and surfers and stretches of low rocks, with a myriad of rock pools, populated by mini-communities of sea creatures and plants. Truro and Falmouth are just fourteen miles away. The Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan, St. Michael’s Mount, Padstow and Land’s End are all an easy drive.
